Renaissance to Rutter
Chandos Choir offered a dramatic contrast in this aptly titled concert. We started with beautiful 16th century polyphony - Victoria (O vos omnes, Jesu dulcis memoria, O quam gloriosum), then Nick O'Neill treated us to a masterful performance of Sweelinck's Variations on 'Mein Junges Leben hat ein'End" followed by a fabulous Palestrina Missa Aeterna Christi Munera.
After the interval however, we moved forward to the 20th Century for a modern take on classic traditional songs, with John Rutter's Sprig of Thyme, followed by our own Robert Randall's arrangements of Lavender's Blue and of Jerome Kern's 'The Way You Look Tonight'. The evening was topped off with some swinging versions of Gershwin classics The Man I love and Fascinatin' Rhythm on piano, and S'Wonderful and I got Rhythm sung with gust by the choir.
A really fascinating and cool look at classy and classic music, well enjoyed by everyone.
